About the client
Our client is building the AI Execution Layer for the European mid-market (German Mittelstand). They act as a secure system layer that translates business intent into audited, compliant system actions across legacy ERP, CRM, DMS, and workflow systems. Backed by angel investors and currently raising their seed extension, they partner with top-tier Private Equity firms to modernize their portfolio companies. They are a remote-first German start-up based south of Munich.
The Role & Your Mission
As a Core Software Engineer, you will design, build, and scale the foundational layers of the client’s platform. You will have end-to-end ownership of their Python-based agent orchestration runtime, their secure execution sandboxes, their Postgres RLS control plane, and their high-throughput background processing systems. This is a highly technical role requiring deep expertise in backend systems, security architecture, and AI orchestration.
What You Will Do
● Architect Agent Runtimes: Design and optimize their Python-based agent orchestration runtime, including super graph routing, semantic tool selection, memory management, and model routing (Vertex, OpenAI, Azure).
● Harden Security & Compliance: Implement and maintain enterprise-grade security features, including Postgres Row-Level Security (RLS) control planes, BYOK (Bring Your Own Key) encryption, PII masking, and secure Python code execution sandboxes.
● Scale Background Processing: Optimize their BullMQ-style queue-backed workers handling asynchronous chat, document extraction, indexing, and scheduled agents.
● Expand the Integration Ecosystem: Develop and maintain our integration framework, including MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers, connected REST APIs, and Elastic API adapters.
● Power the Workflow Engine: Enhance their n8n-like AI Workflow engine, ensuring reliable plan compilation, execution tracing, and human-in-the-loop/supervisor approval gates.
What You Will Bring
● Extensive professional experience building and scaling production-grade backend systems using Python and TypeScript/Node.js.
● Deep knowledge of database design, query optimization, and security controls (specifically Postgres and Row-Level Security).
● Hands-on experience with asynchronous architectures, distributed systems, and message queues (e.g., Redis, BullMQ).
● Proven track record of building AI-driven applications, agentic frameworks, or complex workflow orchestration engines.
● Strong understanding of security concepts (JWT/JWKS, encryption at rest/in transit, sandboxing, and multi-tenant isolation).
● Pragmatic, product-minded engineering approach: you care deeply about code quality, but you care even more about solving real-world business problems for our customers.
● Strong communication skills in English and German.
